How does weather affect MLB? ›

Air temperature, density and humidity are just a few factors among many ways weather can affect the game. Whether it's a cloudy or sunny sky overhead can also have an impact. If there are cloudy skies, it can affect how an outfielder can see the ball off the bat.

Understanding the effects of temperature and humidity requires a simple lesson in meteorology: Warm and humid air is less dense than cool and dry air, so baseballs tend to fly farther as the temperature and humidity climb.

Baseball games are played even if there is light to moderate rain. However, if the rain becomes heavy or if standing water develops on the field, umpires will call for a delay of play.

Let's look at an example of what the probability does mean. If a forecast for a given county says that there is a 40% chance of rain this afternoon, then there is a 40% chance of rain at any point in the county from noon to 6 p.m. local time.

Some people have interpreted it to mean that it will rain 30% of the time, others that it will affect 30% of the area. If we think back to how the number is generated, using an ensemble, we see it isn't really either of those, but more like 30% of forecast simulations suggest it will rain.

Weather conditions are graphically summarised by pictograms. These show sunshine, clouds, precipitation type, intensity and thunderstorms for the time period referenced in the forecast.

If the teams feel that the inclement weather will pass, a rain delay is put into effect. If the teams agree that the inclement weather will not pass in a reasonable amount of time, an official rainout is announced.

Let's now put it all together. A 1-deg increase in temperature results in distances increasing by 0.33 ft. An increase in distance by 0.33 ft will change the number of home runs by (0.33/8.5)*25%, or just about 1%.
