That region consists of the counties of Anderson, Camp, Cherokee, Gregg, Harrison, Henderson, Marion, Panola, Rains, Rusk, Smith, Upshur, Van Zandt and Wood. Hubbard said the Texas Legislature has directed local and regional efforts to increase mobility in Texas move forward. He said East Texas is one of 16 areas of the state working on similar transportation efforts. The East Texas Regional Steering Committee, in conjunction with the Texas Department of Transportation, emphasizes providing comprehensive public transportation throughout East Texas.

Audrey Kariel, former Marshall Mayor and proponent of transportation planning issues, urged anyone with an interest in transportation issues to get involved by attending the sessions. The third session this week will be in Longview 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, when the East Texas Corridor Council, meets at the Longview Public Library.

Featured will be guest speaker Michael Morris, executive director of North Texas Council of Government. "Mr. Morris is well known and respected in the Metroplex and is considered the guru, of the success of rail passenger service there," Hubbard said. He said one of the goals of the regional corridor council is to connect the Dallas area with East Texas via rail. The draft of the East Texas Public Transportation Coordination Plan was composed using public input from the first round of meetings, held in September throughout the East Texas region.

All arrangements should be made by 5 p.m. the day before the scheduled meeting time. The steering committee will make every effort to accommodate special language or mobility needs. Formed in March 2006, the East Texas Regional Steering Committee was organized under Texas Department of Transportation auspices for the purpose of designing a coordination plan for the 14 counties in State Planning Region VI, which includes the area served by the East Texas Staff Reports Public transit issues are gaining steam on the fast track in East Texas with a volley of meetings this month focusing on laying the groundwork for a mobile future, according to Griff Hubbard.

Besides Marshall, the other public meeting is set Monday at 6 p.m. at the United Heritage Credit Union in Tyler. When the doors open at 6 p.m.

East Texas Conference Center Bridge of Compassion is sponsoring a special project for local veterans this Christmas, one they hope to expand in the years to come, according to Conley Keasler, executive, director.

-iThey have put together- a Veterans Christmas Comfort Kit, to be given to. local veterans in need. Many of these people live on a fixed income, and these kits offer a unique opportunity to say "thank you for their willingness to serve in the military, and help keep alive these freedoms we now enjoy." The community's help to provide these kits for our veteran is needed, continued Keasler. Bridge of Compassion is asking local organizations, businesses and individuals to sponsor a kit for a veteran, or more than one if possible. The cost of the kit is $50; each kit consists of personal hygiene items, a lap robethrow, underwear and socks, and food.

Also, donations of Christmas cookies and candies to be distributed to the veterans along with their comfort kits, are sought. The deadline for donations andor prepared kits is Dec. 15. They will be be distributed to needy veterans Dec. 21.
